About Celena Celena began dancing on July 5th, 1973 and has been hooked ever since. Her studies with both Jamilia Salimpour and Aida Al Adawi have influenced her more traditional performance style. She has studied with John Compton and is currently a student of Malia de Felice with who she shares the same roots and mutual respect for one another. Finger cycmbals are her passion along with sword and tray balancing. She has had the honor of performing as a guest with John Compton and Hahbi' Ru at the Renaissance Faire in Hollister and Novato. She has performed throughout the bay area including the Casbah in North Beach, Cafe Maroc in Palo Alto as well as many of the local festivals and events. Celena specializes in musical interpretation and in percussive finger cymbals, called "zills." Celena is known in some circles as "the killer ziller." She performs solo and with Troupe Celené, a group formed from her dance classes. Celena specializes in Middle Eastern and other dance techniques. Her main influences are a fusion of Arabic, Turkish and Egyptian styles. "I fuse these styles with cabaret-style dance. My costuming reflects these influences, as well," says Celena, who has danced professionally in engagements at numerous venues including the Renaissance Faire. |
